What are the Three Types of Trauma?
Acute Trauma: A single, one-time extreme event that impacts a person’s ability to control emotions and feel physically safe.
Chronic Trauma: Prolonged, long-term exposure to a traumatic event. This type of trauma is caused by ongoing, severe occurrences, such as domestic or sexual abuse, harassment or war.
Complex Trauma: Typically a result of abuse, violence or neglect, complex trauma involves the experience of multiple traumatic events.
It is important to understand that trauma can significantly affect physical, emotional and mental health. A person who has experienced trauma benefits from support and treatment to avoid developing mental health and/or substance abuse issues.
